Dalmas Affair II
The Dalmas Affair II
CHAPTER THREE
Asananthe Is The Danger

Things are happening, what started as an ordinary stake-out, and what exactly is one of those? Rapidly developed into a near biblical catastrophe.

But we should start at the beginning of the middle and not get ahead of ourselves. It was raining, raining to beat the band in fact. New York was more like a monsoon district of India than the big apple.

Everything was getting washed away or washing in things which should have stayed drowned in the Hudson.

To say it was wet was like saying Lou Lid was above average in size and a little dressy. There circus tents that were more conspicuous.

With Brian found and back with his family a less distracted Janey was able to help with the important stuff relating to the gunrunning for the IRA and the un-naturally miraculous recovery of Dalmas from his coma.

The Deep Ones had already tried to get their webbed appendages on the still recovering Mr M'Gee.

However they were successfully thwarted a second time by cunning, brute force and overwhelming firepower.

Having killed several denizens of the deep and carried Dalmas down the fire escape, the investigators left the hospital and dropped off Violets at a station house before retiring to a hotel. There they went over their investigations.

They had found out that a mysterious Quebecois named Lamont had originally sold a book in error. Asananthe Waite had realised that it was not the usual 16th century treatise on demons and witches, and that this edition contained a handwritten addendum which made it unique.

When Asananthe had it stolen from her she used her influence to get Violets M'Gee to get it back. During this investigation he experienced strange uncharacteristic lapses and so, unknown to Asananthe arranged for Dalmas to tail him on his next bout of investigations.

How Dalmas found out that both Asananthe and the Lamont who Asananthe, correctly, blamed for the theft of her new acquisition were both able to exert unwanted influence on poor M'Gee.

Furthermore Dalmas realised that Lamont was some kind of Wolf man and after consulting an occult book, resolved to buy some silver bullets for both himself and Violets. Tailing Lamont they realised that not only did he have lupine predilections, he also has another unnatural preoccupation with an old and long established Manhattan Cemetery near where he lived.

Later research by Irma and Wes showed that there were a number of reports of strange sightings and lights in the graveyard and that the city was finding it increasingly difficult to retain the night-watchmen they employed at the cemetery.

Oddly even for this case, Violets cracked the case, without remembering how by recovering the missing book and bringing it back to Asananthe, who after due examination considered the case closed and allowed Violets to get on with his life while she puzzled over the arcane mysteries in the appendices of the ancient tome.

Wesley and Irma found out at the library that the book Violets returned was not the original. It was another copy procured at great expense in quick time from a collector in France. Lamont copied the appendix with a few alterations and this passed Asananthe's scrutiny.

However when she repeatedly failed to learn the spell to which the notes alluded, she finally deduced that Violets must have been influenced by Lamont. As Magoon had gone and inconveniently shot Violets in the head with a .45 she couldn't just ask him about this. She therefore posed as his niece, visited the hospital and healed him. But before she could grab him for questioning the investigators got in the way.

Having gone through Dalmas' and violets case notes from the original investigation and then continued with their own; Donelly, Trent, Irma and Wes headed out to the nicer side of Manhattan to watch over Lamont’s apartment.

The Lamont’s had lived in this area since 1783 just after the fall of Quebec.

The current apartment block though very well appointed was first built in 1820, though it had been modernised and rebuilt many times.

Donelly watched the main entrance from the truck while Trent stayed in the cab making sure to park on top of the nearest manhole cover.

Irma and Wesley arrived separately and plotted up more comfortably in a diner opposite the apartment block.

A fine Bugatti roadster pulled up and out stepped Asananthe and a male companion who preceded to enter the apartment block. Another ugly man walked into the diner from the other corner and made a phone call just after they arrived.

Then as they watched a doorman let in a tall elderly gentleman then went inside himself. Minutes later the Elderly gentleman appeared on the doorway in a concierge’s uniform.

Then two trucks arrived from the Fish market and parked around the corner from the entrance but in sight of the Diner.

A "Mechanic" left the back of one these fish trucks and walked over to the Bugatti which was still parked outside the building. He got the hood up and worked on the engine for about five minutes before going back to the truck.

As the doorman came out two Dimensional Shamblers appeared and attacked him.

Before Donelly could react to this, he collapsed. Trent saw movement in the corner of his eye and spotted a sinister female lurking nearby. He immediately shot her with his Tommy-Gun and though he near emptied the magazine was only just able to kill her as many of his bullets stopped before hitting her.

A thump alerted Trent of yet more dastardly deeds as a monstrous black serpent appeared. Remembering that Greg had summoned the same creature while on a flying island in Africa, as you do, he realised it needed a blood sacrifice as it appeared and directed it to the fresh meat, albeit seasoned with a few bullets that was the Dead Sea hag.

He then rushed to load the gun as the Hunting horror devoured the hag’s corpse.

Before Trent could reload it turned and snaked its vicious hooked tail with all its bestial might. It should have been curtains for Trent but fortune was smiling and he somehow dodged the claw before it could decapitate him.

This mayhem had awoken Donnelly who then fired his B.A.R at the hunting horror and drowned it in a deluge of death.

By now even the heavy rain couldn't all the evil goings on and the people in the diner were beginning to panic.

Another louder deeper more monstrous roar resonated from the roof of the apartment building.

THE FISHMEN ARE BACK

A Deep One seemed to step off the roof and float to ground level. He turned malevolently to the truck and yelled "RUN" at which point Donelly, unimpressed with his amateur dramatics, shot him repeatedly and killed him.

The window of the apartment on the 5th floor where Lamont lived then shattered and large grey wolf bounded to the ground and ran towards the graveyard shouting "RUN".

Leaving the pandemonium of the diner and the monstrous and batrachian corpses behind them, Wes Donelley Irma and Trent drove off after the wolf to the graveyard.

If anything the monsoon was getting worse.

But as they approached the Lamont Mausoleum they saw the wolf transform into a large bearded man once more. A few seconds later a cadaverous skeletal figure joined him. They introduced themselves as Lamont and Ozymandius the ghoulish sorcerer.

Asananthe had grabbed the booked but catastrophically had just read the spell OUT LOUD causing a lesser OUTER GOD to be summoned forth and imperil not just Manhattan but the whole world.

On his own Lamont could not dismiss this god.

It is the way of things that it is always harder to dismiss something monstrous than it is to call it forth. Lamont therefore came to the graveyard to enlist the help of Ozymandius.

They told the investigators that did not have a moment to lose and that they needed help. While they could dismiss the OUTER GOD, they thought, they would be preoccupied doing this and would need the investigators to keep away anything that could distract them.

The worst is yet to come!
